Outdoor Theatre of Straw in Vilarinha

Picture: The Theatre of Straw

An exciting outdoor theatre event will brighten up hot summer nights in Vilarinha, home to our Portuguese holiday rentals in the South West Algarve.

The hamlet, near Carrapateira, Aljezur, is the venue for an authentic theatre made of straw, presented by Lavrar o Mar. Based on “the spirit of the place”, it has been created by architect Pedro Quintela. He has been inspired by the sacred geometry of the nautilus shell and the shape of the human ear.

From July 1-17, 2022 the theatre will host an open-air artistic programme of music, cinema, new circus, dance and an exhibition with a selection of  João Mariano photos to revive memories of  Lavrar o Mar’s life through his lens. In addition, Mr Valentim and Mr Vicente, who have welcomed the theatre to their land, will have their wood oven lit.

Dance to exotic and psychedelic DJ sets from southern latitudes. Enjoy rock and afrobeat to tango and jazz,  watch movies in a wonderful open-air cinema and be enchanted by performances of new circus, Chinese pole and much more!

NOTE:  All spectators are asked to bring a pillow or a small blanket to sit on top of the straw bales.

Surfing  In Portugal and Florida

Picture: A Surfer, Algarve, Portugal

Whether you’re an advanced surfer or first timer in this exhilarating  sport our holiday home locations offer the best of both worlds.

Portugal’s Algarve is renowned for its surfing with classes available to get you started in this exhilarating sport.

It boasts some of the best surfing beaches in the world, all within easy driving distance of our Algarve holiday homes in Vilarinha and Lagos.

For example, Amado Beach offers a good mix of wave conditions. It’s open to all Atlantic swells but is protected by north west winds, making it ideal for both new and experienced surfers. Surf schools and surf camps operate in the area.

Anna Maria Island offers surfing opportunities, too. The best surfing can be found off the White Avenue beach.

Fishing From Beach, Pier Or Boat

With the sea on your doorstep fishing is a popular pastime for holidaymakers in both Florida and Portugal.

On Anna Maria Island you can rent equipment and fish from the Rod Reel or City piers, or from the beaches and jetties around the island. Just don’t forget to arrange a fishing permit ahead of your trip.

In Portugal’s Algarve you can fish from cliffs or beaches or join a chartered sea fishing trip to test your skills with experienced fishermen on hand to support you. Fishing permits are also required in Portugal so joining an organised trip may be the easisest option.

Fishing trips can be arranged from numerous resorts and are particularly plentiful in the seaside town of Lagos. Everything from family trips and reef fishing to shark fishing is available to try.

Sail Away On A Sea Adventure

A multitude of boat trips offer you a chance to explore and enjoy the coast and ocean in both Florida and Portugal.

Sailing adventure trips from Anna Maria Island in Florida offer you a different perspective, the freedom of the ocean, the chance to watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexica or experience a feast of nature.

Enjoy sightings of dolphins, manatees, cormorants, osprey, bald eagle and views beyond compare from a boat sailing through calm waters.

Portugal also excels when it comes to boat trips, one of its most famous being an opportunity to explore coastal caves and grottos along its dramatic coastline. Sail to Lagos’s famous Ponta da Piedade – cliff-like rocks up to 20 metres high. Or why not have a close encounter with the characters beneath the waves on a dolphin trip?

Swimming With Horses In Florida

Picture: Swimming with horses, C Ponies.

Horseback riding across silver sands is the stuff of dreams but visitors to Anna Maria Island in Florida can go one step further – they can SWIM with horses.

This  experience is offered by C Ponies, an AMI leisure company with a big heart. Most of their horses are rescue animals.

These magnificent creatures  will carry you across silver sands. You then enjoy an experience that will stay with you forever – the opportunity to ride a horse as it swims in the ocean.

You will be in waters no more than 3ft deep but will feel a sensation described as ‘like flying’. Hold on to your trusty stead’s mane as their legs move rhythmically through the water. The horses are never forced to swim, it’s actually their favourite bit, according to C Ponies.
